Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about kitchen fitting, renovation, and working with J R Cook Kitchen Installations.
Planning
Do I need to supply the kitchen, or can you help me source one?
Either works. Many customers come to us with a kitchen already purchased — from B&Q, IKEA, Magnet, Wren or elsewhere — and we'll install it to a high standard. If you haven't chosen a kitchen yet and want practical advice on what to look for, we're happy to share guidance based on years of fitting experience. We don't have a financial relationship with any particular supplier, so our advice is always honest and based on what works well in practice.
How long does a full kitchen installation take?
It depends on the scope of work. A straightforward fitting of a small kitchen might take three to five days. A complete renovation — involving strip-out, plastering, tiling, flooring, electrical work, plumbing, and fitting — typically takes between one and three weeks. We'll give you a clear timeline before work starts, and we'll keep you updated throughout. We never rush a job at the expense of quality.
What should I do to prepare before the work starts?
Before work begins, we'll confirm the full scope and timeline so you know what to expect each day. On your end, it helps to clear the kitchen of personal items and to give us reasonable access to the space. For larger renovations, it's worth thinking about alternative cooking arrangements for the duration. We'll discuss everything in advance so you're fully prepared.
What is included in a typical kitchen renovation?
A full kitchen renovation can include: stripping out and disposing of the old kitchen, replastering walls, electrical work (new circuits, lighting, extraction), plumbing (repositioning the sink, connecting appliances), flooring, wall and floor tiling, fitting all new units and worktops, installing appliances, and all the finishing joinery — skirting, coving, boxing-in of pipes, and any bespoke carpentry. Not every project will need all of these elements — we'll assess what's required and quote accordingly.
Coverage
What areas of Bristol do you cover?
We're based in Bedminster Down and cover all of Bristol and many surrounding areas. This includes Bedminster, Southville, Clifton, Redland, Bishopston, Westbury-on-Trym, Henleaze, Stoke Bishop, Cotham, and the wider city. If you're not sure whether we cover your area, just ask — we're often able to accommodate projects outside our regular area depending on availability.
How We Work
Do you handle all the trades yourselves, or do you bring in subcontractors?
We manage the full project, which means you have one clear point of contact and one set of accountability throughout. We take care of all the coordination involved in bringing together the different aspects of a kitchen renovation — fitting, tiling, flooring, plumbing, electrical and plastering work. This is one of the key reasons customers value working with us: no confusion about who's responsible for what, and no unpleasant surprises.
Can you work with kitchens from any supplier?
Yes. We fit kitchens from all major retailers — including B&Q, IKEA, Magnet, Wren, Howdens, Wicks, and independent kitchen studios. We've worked with a wide range of kitchen systems and worktop materials, including Hi-Macs solid surface worktops, composite stone, and laminate. If you have a specific kitchen in mind, just let us know and we can confirm we're comfortable working with it.
How do you keep the house clean and tidy during a kitchen renovation?
We take site cleanliness seriously. At the end of every working day, we clear away debris, dust, and packaging so that the disruption to your home is kept to a minimum. We use dust sheets and protection to reduce mess in the areas we're working through. Customers with children, pets, or anyone who's been through a stressful renovation before particularly value this aspect of how we work.
What if something goes wrong or I'm not happy with part of the work?
We stand behind every project we complete. If there's anything you're not satisfied with before handover — or if a snagging issue arises after completion — we'll address it promptly and professionally. Our reputation is built on repeat business and recommendations, and we take any concerns seriously. We only consider a job done when you're genuinely happy with the result.
